There is no doubt that many business owners have been challenged with COVID-19 over the past 3 months, and we are not even sure about how things may go if we have a second or third wave, but we all need to press on to take our business to the next level to ensure we survive and thrive.  Many companies and organisations have been seriously impacted; however, it is time to get our businesses thriving again for the 2021 Financial Year ahead!

It is all about our mindset; we move forward and get on with developing a profitable business again.  During this COVID-19 pandemic, some businesses have soared, where many others have fallen short, or even gone out of business, which is tragic.  This pandemic has forced many companies and organisations to re-think their strategy, their team as well as products and services offered.  The last 3 months we have all lived in survival mode but with the new financial year approaching, now is the time to re-focus/ re-think your strategy to take your business to the next level and to start building profitable income back into our business so you are not relying on Government JobKeeper which most likely will not be available come end of September.

You need to stay positive and surround yourself with people who are resilient when challenged and have a positive mindset about the future.  In crisis situations like COVID-19, it is extremely important that you keep a positive attitude and a mindset that is resilient, so if you struggle with this, surround yourself with positive people who can help you get through.

In front of your team, you cannot panic, you need to keep your composure and be level-headed in the way you communicate and feel towards the COVID-19 situation and other obstacles that have come your way.  It is important to now think in a positive way, so you end up having positive results.  The successful people in this world know what they want and how to get it.  They are positive and visualise ways to make thing happen for them!

So, what creates a positive mindset?

Below are some ways you can have a positive mindset to deal with getting your business to the next level this coming financial year:

  • Having set goals – Know what you want!
  • Be assumptive in achieving them
  • Have positive thoughts and use positive affirmations
  • Hang around with positive people
  • Make sure your team is positive
  • Be present and focus on the good things over the smaller issues
  • Be agile to turn things around
  • Be organised every day
  • Be in control of your own destiny
  • Treat failures or setbacks into lessons learnt
  • Be prepared to accept failure, so you can get back and re-think your strategy!

Watch my webinar on – Time to get your business thriving again in the new financial year

For most of us during the COVID-19 pandemic, we went into disruption and disorganisation, we were reactive rather than being proactive.  To get your business prepared for success, you need to get organised again, not only for yourself, but also for your staff as many of them are lost awaiting on future announcements, and you need to get them back on track to help rebuild your business.  There are many staff looking for job security at the moment, and the best way to motivate them is to show and engage them in your updated strategy for 2021 FY.  I think it is really important that you demonstrate your leadership qualities and show them the plan/s you have put in place to take your company to the next level.

My tips are as follows:

  • Show and explain to your staff/ teams what you want to achieve
  • Ensure that you have a set budget in place
  • Workshop the KPIs and targets with your departments/ teams
  • Review your people structure and roles and responsibilities
  • Go through your marketing plan
  • Explain your ‘client plan’ for existing clients
  • Review and update on your products and services
  • Any changes or requirements needed with your systems & processes
  • Training needs for teams or individuals
  • Set new business goals and milestone achievements
  • Look at ways to celebrate, reward or recognise great efforts

It is time to reset the expectations with your team.  For your company to be successful you need to be more assertive of what you want your staff to do and be clear on the reporting lines – who you want them to manage upwards, to you.  You need to set the scene for 2021, showcase how your company will be successful and the reasons why you have made decisions, who has been involved in the decision-making process and the outcomes expected.  You need to create the motivation, engagement and the expectations for your leaders to lead and based on the goals that have been set within your business.  You need to be 100% clear on your expectations and also put a performance plan in place to make your strategy happen.

The saying goes ‘if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail’.  To be successful to take your company to the next level, you need to have a good strategy, and it needs to be workshopped, documented, and then actioned.  The companies that will exceed over the next 12 months, will have re-thought their strategy, sought professional advice and experience to ensure they have a well-executed plan in place and most of all, they would have engaged someone to hold them accountable to stay focused on the game plan, regardless of whatever other challenges come their way over the next 12-18 months because business is tough at the moment!
