We hear the term “employer of choice” used a lot by many businesses claiming they are one. This term can mean different things for different people based on your own set of personal values.

At Key Business Advisors we believe to be an employer of choice, your Vision, Mission and Values must inspire your employees to care deeply about the company and make them want to be there! This promotes a fantastic working environment that in turn will help the company thrive.

Here are KBA’s top 10 tips to be a great employer.

1. Culture

All great companies have a very clear Mission Statement, Vision Statement and Values. Without these, how else will employees know what the end game is? They want to know what they are working towards so you can be on the journey together.

2. Work Life Balance

Be a business who walks the walk, not just talks the talk with work life balance. Gone are the days of people working 9-5 Monday – Friday. Many people are now wanting the flexibility of part time employment, working from home or flexible start and finish times. Changing your approach to this and allowing employees this flexibility (where the business can allow) will lead to engaged employees who will give you 100% in return. According to Adam Grant, organizational psychologist and New York Times bestselling author of Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World, “People waste a lot of time at work, I’d be willing to bet that in most jobs, people would get more done in six focused hours than eight unfocused hours.”

3. Communication

Employees want to work in a business where communication is constant and transparent. Not only that, they want to be part of a business that seeks feedback on its culture and work practices. Let them be heard, some of your best ideas will come from your employees.

4. Engagement

How happy are your employees? Conduct an annual STAR workplace survey in your business to find out how happy your employees are. With the results, make a commitment to work on areas of improvement and stick to it.

5. Remuneration

Everyone wants to get paid an honest wage for an honest day’s work!

6. Benefits

Not all benefits need to be costly. Have casual dress Friday’s, Monday morning tea’s, Long lunch Wednesday, give employees their birthday off work etc.

7. Social Responsibility

It’s not just about profits, show that you care for the greater community. This may involve taking part in Charity Days, fundraising for charities or events in your local community.

8. Career Development

Give clear definitions of employees roles via a Position Description and what success looks like. Create a plan for your employee regarding their career development. Where you can promote from within, give people the opportunity to progress on their career.

9. La Familia

Make people feel part of the team or even better a family. As the God Father said “You can do anything. But never go against the family”. Don Vito Corleone.

10. Celebrate the Wins

Employees want to be acknowledged for a job well done. Celebrate success. It can be as simple as a pat on the back or as lavish as fancy dinner out. Either way people like to know they are contributing to the success of your business.
