Leadership Matters
Many people think being a leader is easy, but it’s not. Some people possess natural leadership qualities, and then there are those who may be seen as a manager, a micro-manager, or even a person of no real authority, simply because they haven’t earned the respect that comes with being a leader. As a business owner, naturally, your team are looking for leadership qualities in you, so it’s something you must focus on as it plays a very important part in your ongoing role as a leader.
The first thing to consider about leadership is whether you see yourself as a leader. As the head of your company, your leadership matters, and it all starts with the environment that you create. It’s about the professionalism you portray. You must ensure that you create an empowering workplace that drives the right behaviours for a respectful workplace, including managing the well-being of your team.
The Difference Between a Manager and a Leader
It is important to understand the difference between a Manager and a Leader, as you will need to play both roles. You need to learn how to be a great coach, manage outcomes, and mentor team members so they develop into valuable employees. Your communication must be clear, concise and thorough in all aspects of your leadership role. It is up to you to set the boundaries with your team to create good energy within your company. You must create an environment where your team wants to come to work every day and stay with you to support the journey of your company.
Leadership is about empowering your team, making a positive difference. It is about getting your team on board, following your Mission, Vision, Purpose and company Values, making sure they are inspired to do what is needed for your company. When there is a strong strategy, with clear goals and objectives, led by you, your team will be focused on delivering positive outcomes and solid revenue results.
If you abuse the power of a leader, then be prepared to lose control and respect from your team. Good-quality staff will likely leave if they’re not aligned with you and don’t share the same values. Being on the receiving end of arrogance, poor communication with misleading or disengaged messages will not do you any favours. And getting angry or upset over things will take current issues from bad to worse which can lead to hatred between parties.
To me, the difference between a manager and a leader is that managers do the right thing, whilst leaders do things right.
Leaders, lead from the front, building strategies and creating the vision, whilst focusing on ways to drive better performance.
A manager follows the process and is very good at implementing new initiatives linked to company policies and procedures. They make sure that everyone knows what the company needs to do to become more effective.
You need to know how to empower your team to make a positive difference, where they feel a part of your company’s journey for greater success. You need to ensure they are committed to building strong relationships with your team, like family within your business, where there is a high care factor in everything they do.
Great leaders are very good at the people management aspect of running a business. This needs to become one of your key strengths as a leader. You need to know how to empower your team and support your future leaders through having good mentorship. If done right, these leaders will put strong measures in place that challenge others. They will become your high influencers in encouraging and managing change, working on the things that matter, ensuring it’s about achieving the goals, targets, and objectives of your company.
