In today’s world, it’s not unusual to be working with up to five generations in your workforce, often across multiple nationalities, cultures and personality types. If this complexity isn’t managed well, it can quickly become a recipe for disaster. As a leader, taking the time to engage with and understand your colleagues is essential. This is where your leadership needs to stand out, having your team focused on the things that matter, where they see the benefits of working cohesively together, linked to the strategic direction of your business.

Having a diverse workforce brings many benefits to a business. Communication is the magic formula while also using the right platforms and technologies linked to your mission, vision and values. Your team must be aligned and trust one another, which contributes to company performance, team culture and job satisfaction.

Through the way you lead and manage your team, you must know how to coach and mentor to bring out the best in them. They need to fully understand and be aligned with the business’s goals and objectives. You must ensure your team is aware of what behaviour is acceptable and what is not in the way they interact with one another to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering fantastic results, not only for your business, but also for your customers.

Let’s have a look at how to better engage and understand your work colleagues.

Understanding the Generations (McCrindle Research).

Baby Boomers: Born between 1946 -1964 – This generation will bring great experience and knowledge to your workforce and can play a powerful mentoring role. They may be in, or have held senior roles, making them great contributors when sharing their knowledge and experience with others. They never grew up with today’s technologies and may struggle a bit in grasping it.

Generation X: Born between 1965 – 1979 – This generation often in a leadership role, demonstrating leadership qualities by wanting to take on more responsibilities in coaching, managing and mentoring others to succeed. They are a hands-on generation who thrive by sharing their knowledge and experience with others. They grew up as new technologies emerged, with computers and mobile phones being introduced to the market.

Millennials / Generation Y: Born between 1980 -1994 – This generation will be a large proportion of the workforce, driving innovation whilst finding it easier to adapt to new technologies. They are a generation that understands the value of working and sharing their knowledge and experience with others through today’s technologies. They grew up alongside rapid technological advancements such as computers and mobile phones, supporting more innovative ways of working.

Generation Z: Born between 1995 -2009 – This generation also a significant part of the workforce, embracing today’s technology and fast-paced at what they do every day. They are a generation that fully understands the value of working collaboratively on projects. They want leadership now for quicker career progression. This generation are the teachers when it comes to new technology.

Generation Alpha: Born between 2010 -2024 – This generation is a new generation only beginning to enter the workforce, mostly through casual or part-time work, as they look to gain experience.

Understanding Different Nationalities and Cultures

There are many benefits to working in a multicultural workforce. Sharing experiences and beliefs from multicultural backgrounds enhances team morale through shared family values, different cultural perspectives and food. By understanding the different elements that shape each generation, we can see that while perspectives may vary, people from all age groups seek a sense of belonging and purpose in their work. They want to contribute meaningfully and work towards achieving organisational goals, all while enjoying the work that they do. Embracing both cultural and generational diversity is a key strength that supports inclusive and effective teams.

Understanding Different Personalities

Employees are the biggest cost to a business, so it is critical to get the best out of every employee. DiSC Profiling provides business owners with a cost-effective way to do just that, utilising DiSC profiling tools to maximise employee potential. It helps people understand why different personalities behave the way they do, and why some individuals react differently in certain situations. When teams recognise each other’s strengths and challenges, collaboration improves, and misunderstandings reduce.

At KBA, we recommend and facilitate DiSC workshops. These sessions help individuals understand their own behaviour and personality style, as well as those of others. No personality style is better than another – we all have traits – but each person has a primary style they feel most comfortable using at work. Completing a profile yourself can be a real eye-opener, particularly in understanding your impact as a leader.
