There is no doubt that many businesses are facing significant challenges right now, particularly small and medium-sized businesses. Almost every business owner I have spoken with recently has acknowledged that conditions are tougher than they have been for some time.

Rising costs, ongoing economic uncertainty, workforce challenges, and pressure on profitability are forcing many businesses to make difficult decisions. Many business owners are taking a cautious approach and delaying investment decisions, which has created a sense of hesitation across the business community.

This uncertainty is making it harder for business owners to plan ahead with confidence. As a result, many businesses are reviewing their expenses, becoming more conservative with spending, and focusing on preserving cash flow.

During challenging times, business owners need to maintain a positive mindset, but that is easier said than done when you’re under constant pressure and dealing with stress every day.

Of course, not every business is struggling. There are many businesses that continue to perform well. However, it is those businesses facing significant challenges that concern us most, because we want to see every business succeed.

Many companies are operating in an environment where predicting the future feels almost impossible. Yet as business owners, we still need to keep moving forward and making decisions.

Ongoing cost pressures, inflationary challenges, and higher interest rates continue to place additional strain on many businesses, making it increasingly difficult to plan with confidence and maintain profitability. What many people forget is that small and medium-sized businesses are the backbone of employment in Australia. When a business struggles, difficult sacrifices often need to be made to survive.

With that in mind, here are five important areas to focus on during uncertain times.

1. Communication

Communication is critical. Keep your team informed about where the business is headed and how it is performing. At the same time, maintain strong communication with landlords, suppliers, customers, and other key stakeholders. These relationships become even more important during challenging periods.

2. Leadership

Your team will look to you for direction. Focus on maintaining momentum, improving processes, and identifying sales opportunities. Sales are the lifeblood of every business, so keep your attention on the activities that drive revenue and growth.

3. Review Your Marketing Initiatives

Now is not the time to disappear from the market. Review your marketing activities and look for ways to stand out from competitors. Consider alternative approaches that create interest, build awareness, and generate opportunities.

4. Identify Revenue Opportunities

Work with your team to understand where demand currently exists. Focus on the products, services, and solutions that your existing and potential customers need most. Develop targeted campaigns that attract new opportunities and strengthen existing relationships.

5. Commitment and Accountability

Nothing happens without commitment and accountability. Ensure you and your team remain focused, positive, and aligned around key priorities. Set clear boundaries and achievable goals for the remainder of the year so you can enter 2027 ready for stronger growth and performance.

Looking After Yourself

What is most important is that you, as the business owner, have the mental capacity to keep going.

Running a business is not easy, and if you are struggling, I encourage you to seek support. If you employ fewer than 20 staff, take a look at Beyond Blue’s NewAccess for Small Business Owners program. It is a free and confidential service that provides access to qualified mental health coaches who can help you manage stress, anxiety, and the pressures that come with running a business.

While the challenges are real, I remain optimistic about the resilience of Australian business owners. Time and time again, I have seen businesses adapt, innovate, and come out stronger on the other side of difficult periods. The key is to stay focused on what you can control, seek support when you need it, and continue taking positive steps forward.

Giving Back Through “Your Business Beyond Tomorrow”

September has been a significant month for me with the release of my first business book, Your Business Beyond Tomorrow: Either You Run Your Business or It Will Run You!”

The purpose of the book is simple: to help business owners build stronger, more sustainable businesses and create a better future for themselves, their teams, and their families.

Having experienced many of the challenges that business owners face, I have committed to donating the profits from the book to Beyond Blue to support the important work they do in helping Australians navigate mental health challenges.
