Helping Your Business Thrive in an Uncertain Economy
Small and medium-sized businesses are the backbone of the Australian economy. Collectively, we employ millions of people, support local communities, and drive economic growth. As business owners, we also take on significant responsibility and risk every day.
With ongoing cost pressures, inflation, changing market conditions, a Victorian election on the horizon and a Federal election next year, many business owners continue to face uncertainty. Our resilience is being tested, which is why it is more important than ever that we support one another and stay focused on what we can control.
We need to maintain a positive mindset and adopt a “survive and thrive” strategy as we move towards the end of 2026. Many business owners put their employees first because they understand how critical their team is to delivering on commitments made to their customers. We willingly put in the extra hours, face the challenges head-on, and do what is required to keep moving forward.
Things do not always go to plan, but through resilience, determination, and a willingness to adapt, we find a way through. That’s what business owners do.
So, where are you right now?
Are you growing, changing, consolidating, or are you living in fear of the unknown?
These may be challenging questions, but they are important ones to ask. If things are not where you want them to be, now is the time to have conversations with trusted advisers and your professional network who can help you get back on track.
At Key Business Advisors, we are passionate about supporting business owners with practical business and HR advice, guidance, and solutions that help them move forward with confidence.
There are businesses doing exceptionally well in the current environment, while others are finding it more difficult. The key is to focus on what you can control rather than what you cannot.
Ask yourself:
What do I need to do to get back in the driver’s seat and strengthen my business, regardless of what is happening around me?
Below are some tips that may help.
1. Business Performance
Make sure your business is positioned to manage the challenges of the current market.
Increase staff engagement, strengthen customer relationships, and pay close attention to your numbers. What are they telling you? The data often provides valuable insights into what needs attention.
If you need support, seek advice from the right professionals who can help you identify opportunities, manage risk, and build confidence in your decision-making.
2. Sales & Marketing Performance
You need to maximise every sales opportunity. Speed to lead remains one of the most effective ways to win new business.
Where possible, invest in your marketing and continue to showcase what makes your business different. Opportunities still exist, but in a tougher market, you may need to work harder and be more proactive in finding them.
3. People Performance
Your people play a critical role in the success of your business.
Ensure your team understands the direction of the business and is committed to delivering their best. If you have team members who are underperforming, or managers who are not providing effective leadership, these issues should be addressed promptly.
Strong businesses are built on strong people.
4. Teamwork
Teamwork is one of the most important drivers of success.
Keep your team engaged and involved in the journey. Help them understand the reasons behind business decisions and create an environment where people feel valued and motivated to contribute.
Recognise and celebrate great teamwork whenever you see it. A positive culture can make a significant difference during challenging times.
5. Communication
As you implement your survive and thrive strategy, ensure everyone understands the goals, priorities, and direction of the business.
Keep communication channels open, celebrate successes, and involve your team in solving challenges. Often, the best solutions come from the people closest to the work.
Looking After Yourself
As I’ve mentioned in previous newsletters, one of the most important factors in business success is your own wellbeing.
Running a business is not easy, and if you are struggling, I encourage you to seek support. If you employ fewer than 20 staff, take a look at Beyond Blue’s NewAccess for Small Business Owners program. It is a free and confidential service that provides access to qualified mental health coaches who can help you manage stress, anxiety, and the pressures that come with running a business.
While the challenges are real, I remain optimistic about the resilience of Australian business owners. Time and time again, I’ve seen businesses adapt, innovate, and emerge stronger from difficult periods.
Stay focused on what you can control, seek support when you need it, and keep taking positive steps forward. The Australian business community is resilient, and together we can continue to survive, thrive, and make a meaningful contribution to our economy and local communities.
Giving Back Through Your Business Beyond Tomorrow
The past month has been a significant one for me with the release of my first business book, Your Business Beyond Tomorrow: Either You Run Your Business or It Will Run You!.
The purpose of the book is simple: to help business owners build stronger, more sustainable businesses and create a better future for themselves, their teams, and their families.
Having experienced many of the challenges that business owners face, I understand the pressures, uncertainty, and responsibility that come with running a business. That’s why I’ve committed to donating all profits from the book to Beyond Blue to support the important work they do in helping Australians navigate mental health challenges.
